Alzheimer’s Portrayed on the Silver Screen

Julie Christie

Two movies give us revealing looks at Alzheimer's disease and dementia.

Academy Award winner Julie Christie earned a Golden Globe Award for her role in "Away From Her". The 2007 film, directed by actor Sarah Polley, stars Christie as Fiona, a woman slipping away to Alzheimer's. It deals with how the disease affects her relationship with her husband of almost 50 years.

Olympia Dukakis co-stars in the film. Both Polley and Dukakis have collaborated with the Alzheimer’s Association by becoming Alzheimer Champions to raise awareness about Alzheimer's.

"The Savages" is another film tackling the issue of dementia. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney play Jon and Wendy Savage, a brother and sister who must bring their father, played by Philip Bosco, who is suffering from dementia, across the country so he can move into a nursing home near where they live. Philip Seymour Hoffman was nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in this movie.
